Check it out!
Much has changed for seventh-grader Maggie, first introduced in The Melting of Maggie Bean (2007). After following a weight-loss program, she is a healthy, confident member of her school's swim team. Summer brings new opportunities: at a day camp where she teaches swimming, she finds new friends and potential romance, and she helps start a healthy-eating program for kids. But there are also challenges, including a scuffle with her best friend, and she continues to struggle with her self-image and priorities. Ultimately, though, Maggie gains new perspectives on what's most important, inside and out. The ubiquitous brand-name references are distracting, but this contemporary read features an appealing protagonist and issues teens will appreciate, including Maggie's weight-loss struggles, romance lost and found, and her questions about what true friendship means. Young people who read the first title will enjoy the diverse new and returning characters, while all readers will enjoy following Maggie on her road to self-acceptance.
Yay!
